In 2010, following the breakup of P.S. Eliot, Crutchfield formed the project Waxahatchee, beginning with the recording of American Weekend in 2012, which was an initial step into her lo-fi folk style, influenced by her interest in punk music. Musical beginnings

Katie Crutchfield began her musical career as a teenager with her twin sister Allison, when they formed their first band, The Ackleys, at the age of 15 while attending Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, Alabama. The group, initially a lo-fi project, grew into a polished power-pop quartet, playing school events and local tours before disbanding.

In 2007, the Crutchfield sisters formed P.S. Eliot, a pop-punk band that embodied a dedicated DIY ethos, recording in their parents’ garage and distributing through informal networks like Myspace and MediaFire. Between 2007 and 2011, the band released more than a dozen cassettes, CD-Rs, and EPs, including the raw 2008 Bike Wreck demo, the 2009 full-length Introverted Romance in Our Troubled Minds, the 2010 Living in Squalor EP, and the 2011 album Sadie. Their music combined the energy of punk with the melodies of pop, taking influences from bands like Guided by Voices and riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill, and early efforts had a harsh lo-fi production that captured the rawness of teenage experimentation. Lyrically, P.S. Eliot mined teenage angst, emotional chaos, and personal ambiguity, as in “Tennessee” and “Incoherent Love Songs,” mirroring the sisters’ own struggles with self and love in a male-dominated punk milieu.

Musical style and influences

Waxahatchee’s music has been characterized by confessional lyrics that navigate personal struggles, frequently dealing with issues of addiction, heartbreak, and self-doubt, as well as recurring themes of Southern identity and close relationships. Earlier works were lo-fi, bedroom recorded, focusing on raw vulnerability, spare acoustic arrangements and punk-influenced energy, leading to an immediate, unpolished intimacy. Over the years these fundamentals have evolved into fuller-band arrangements, with country and Americana instrumentation such as pedal steel guitar and banjo, yet maintaining a poetic, lilting vocal style that carries emotional immediacy.

Personal life

In her early 20s in the 2010s, Crutchfield dated a few high-profile partners, including a relationship lasting more than a decade that ended around 2017 amid personal strife. Such breakups (including her separation from longtime collaborator and ex-boyfriend Keith Spencer) led to time spent in emotional introspection that contributed to her personal growth.

Crutchfield has been in a long-term relationship with singer-songwriter Kevin Morby since 2018, and the couple lives together in the Kansas City suburbs.
